The University of Louisville men's golf team shot a final round 299 to finish 17th at the NCAA East Regional at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday.
The Cardinals shot 285-282-299=866, but finished 16 shots back from advancing to the next round. The Cardinals creeped up to seventh place after play on Friday, but shot 15-over par as a team to end the most successful season in school history.
"It was a great year," said head coach Mark Crabtree. "I'm a little disappointed with the way we played Saturday, but these kids have accomplished a lot and I'm very proud of them."
Freshman Derek Fathauer continued his fine play with a 2-under par 69 on the day to try and keep the Cardinals in contention. Seniors Charlie Woo and Brett Jones each shot 77 on the day to end their extremely impressive collegiate careers. Junior Brett Holmes also shot 77 in Saturday's final round.
Despite being eliminated, it was an outstanding year. Louisville won four tournaments this year and had three individual winners. Furthermore, the Cards advanced to their first NCAA Regional.
The Cardinals lose only Woo and Jones to next year's sqad, which looks to be even better in 2005-06.
