Field Hockey Closes Spring Season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville field hockey team closed out the 2005 spring season by hosting the Louisville 7 v 7 Spring Tournament April 23-24 at Trager Stadium. Other participating teams included: Midwest Elite, Northwestern, Iowa, Indiana, Saint Louis, Ohio University, Ball State and Southwest Missouri. The Cardinals competed in two teams, Louisville Black and Louisville Red.
On Saturday, the teams competed in seven aside games. Louisville Red played in Pool A and suffered losses to Saint Louis (1-0), Iowa (2-1), Ohio (2-0) and Indiana (1-0). Louisville Black competed in Pool B, where the tied Northwestern (0-0), fell to Midwest Elite (3-1), lost to Ball State (3-2) and defeated Southwest Missouri (6-1).
In crossover play, Louisville Red defeated Southwest Missouri 2-1 and Louisville Black beat Ohio 3-1.
Sunday featured 11 v 11, full-field games. In their first game, the Cards defeated Ohio University 4-0 with goals from Jessica Javelet (assist from Lisa Wasser), Janelle Avila (assist from Casey Diener), Missy Briery (assist Diener) and Laken Letellier (assist from April White).
Louisville followed with a 2-1 loss to Northwestern. Javelet posted the only U of L goal in the game with an assist from Jen Payne.
The Cardinals defeated Southwest Missouri 4-1 as Javelet opened the scoring with an unassisted goal. Wasser added to the lead with her own unassisted score. Jen Kastelic gave Louisville a 3-0 lead and Wasser added her second goal of the game to cap off the Cards' scoring.
U of L closed out the tournament against Indiana. The Cards got on the scoreboard when Avila connected on a penalty corner with assists from Rachel Overton and Kastelic. The Hoosier tied the game, but Javelet delivered on a corner pass from Kastelic to put Louisville ahead 2-1. IU again tied the score, forcing the game into penalty strokes which the Hoosiers won 5-4.
