
Field Hockey Tops Michigan State 4-0 in Spring Game

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team opened the 2005 spring season with a 4-0 win over Michigan State Friday at Trager Stadium.
The teams played three full-field 25-minute periods. After battling through a scoreless first period, sophomore Jessica Javelet gave the Cards a 1-0 lead in the second period. Freshman Beth Latham added another goal as the Cardinals capitalized on a penalty corner. Freshman Laken Letellier gave Louisville a 3-0 lead in the third period and freshman Janelle Avila capped the scoring with another goal. Freshman goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller notched the shutout.
"I was very pleased with the way the team executed the things we have talked about in our preparation," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We have worked very hard to continue to improve and hopefully will build on this in the fall."
The Spartans finished the 2004 season with an 18-4 record after advancing the NCAA semifinals. Michigan State was ranked No. 8 in the final STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
U of L finished the 2004 season with a 12-10 overall record and posted a program-best 8-2 MAC record while tying Kent State for the regular season championship. After winning their second consecutive MAC Tournament the team earned the league's bid to an NCAA play-in game.
