
Field Hockey Competes in Hoosier Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- - The University of Louisville field hockey team held . The field featured Indiana, Iowa, Ball State, Miami, Saint Louis, Southwest Missouri, U of L Red and U of L Black. The Cards divided into two teams in the 7 v 7tournament. U of L Red finished fifth in the tournament while U of L Black finished sixth.
U of L Red tied Indiana 1-1 on Jen Kastelic's goal on a pass from April White. They went on to beat Miami 2-0 as Missy Briery scored with an assist from Stacy Becht and Casey Diener added an insurance goal with a feed from Janneke DuBois. Saint Louis defeated the Red Team 1-0. In crossovers, Briery scored with an assist grom duBois to give the Red Team a 1-0 win over Ball State. The two Cardinal teams played each other for fifth place with the Red Team winning 2-0 with Kastelic and Allison Maffitt delivering unassisted goals.
UofL Black opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Iowa. They beat Ball State 4-1 as Jessica Javelet scored. Janelle Avila also posted an unassisted goal. Avila delivered a pass to Javelet for U of L Black's third goal and Javelet passed to Carrie Jackson to cap the scoring against Ball State. Southwest Missouri State picked up a 2-1 win over U of L Black, Avila capitalized on a penalty corner with assists from Jackson and Rachel Overton. In crossovers, U of L Black beat Miami 5-2. Louisville's goals came from Lisa Wasser with an assist from Avila. Avila then scored off of a Wasser feed. Avila scored again with an assist from Jackson. Avila then tallied her third goal of the contest with an unassisted goal. Jackson took a pass from Javelet on to take advantage of a penalty corner. UofL Black lost to UofL Red for a sixth place finish. Marie-Claire Heller played in goal for both teams.
"Having 2 teams compete in the 7-a-side tournament allowed us to fulfill our goals of getting more players playing time and strengthening our depth as a team," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Both teams were comprised of a mix of experience and youth. The combination provided our program with great competition, and more importantly, a wonderful teaching opportunity for everyone! It was fun to have both teams end up meeting in the crossovers. I think that was our most intense match of the day!"
On Sunday, the teams played a full-field tournament. The Cards tied Saint Louis 0-0. U of L beat Miami 1-0 on Avila's unassisted goal. The Cards defeated Southwest Missouri as Diener scored on a pass from Avila and Briery took a feed from Kastelic for the 2-0 win. The Cardinals closed out the tournament with a 1-1 tie against Indiana. Louisville's goal came on penalty stroke by Wasser.
"After competing on separate teams the day before, TEAM CARDINAL was excited to put it all together on Sunday," said Bustin."Playing full field 11 v 11 took a moment of adjustment, but once we woke up, we were able to really play. The full field game enabled TEAM CARDINAL to create the attack movement that we have been working on and to organize the defensive system that we hope to master by August. It was a great weekend for the development of our entire program."
