
Field Hockey Signs Three

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- - University of Louisville field hockey coach Pam Bustin has announced that three student-athletes have signed National Letters-of-Intent to continue their education and playing careers at the University of Louisville.
Lauren Schaefer, a midfielder/forward from Millersville, Pa. Schaefer is a senior at Penn Manor High School where she was a team tri-captain and MVP her senior year. She is a four-time Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star and two-time All-State selection. She earned National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Academic Squad honors her senior year.
Courtney Shepstone, a back from Jamberoo, New South Wales, Australia, is a senior at St. Joseph's Catholic High School where she was a two-year captain and MVP. She is a member of the New South Wales Under-18 state squad. In 2004, Shepstone was captain of the national champion NSW U-18 Indoor team and co-captain of the International Hockeyfest Champion NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) U-18 team. As a junior, she was vice-captain the national runner-up NSW U-18 Indoor team and South Coast Indoor state champion team. Shepstone is a four-time Catholic Discese Sports Award recipient.
Julie Anne Smith, a back from Louisville, Ky., was co-captain of 2004 state runner-up Sacred Heart Academy. She was a 2004 All-Jefferson County first team selection and earned the SHA Defense Award. As a junior, Smith was an All-Jefferson County honorable mention recipient, was named to the 2003 Coaches' All-State second team and the Apple All-Tournament team. She also earned Academic-All-State honors her junior and senior years.
"We are pleased and excited to announce the signing of three new Cardinals to the field hockey roster," said Bustin. "The skill and style within this freshmen class will immediately complement our already talented young squad and provide added depth and versatility to our team. Lauren, Courtney and Julie Ann already possess the work ethic and determination that Team Cardinal demands. Each of them truly loves the game, loves to play and loves to win. Most importantly...they are inspired and proud to be Louisville Cardinals!"
U of L finished the 2004 season with a 12-10 overall record and posted a program-best 8-2 MAC record while tying Kent State for the regular season championship. After winning their second consecutive MAC Tournament, the Cards earned the leagues NCAA play-in game bid.
