ANN ARBOR, Mich. - - The 16th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated No. 10 Iowa 5-2 Saturday at Michigan.
"Our team earned this win today," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "This was a total team effort with contributions from everybody. We were able to put together a complete game and beat a very good Iowa team today."
The teams played mostly a midfield game before the Hawkeyes jumped to a 1-0 lead at the 7:49 mark when Kadi Sickel connected on Kara Zappone's pass to the right side of the cage.
The Cardinals answered when junior Jessica Javelet tipped junior Lisa Wasser's penalty corner shot to tie the game at the 19:04 mark.
The teams entered halftime knotted at 1-1. Louisville outshot Iowa 8-4 and held a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners in the first half.
The Cards came out firing in the second half when Javelet sent a pass from the right side of the circle to senior Jen Payne who delivered a shot past Iowa goalkeeper Lissa Munley to give U of L a 2-1 lead at the 44:11 mark.
Six minutes later, Javelet tipped another Wasser penalty corner shot to make the score 3-1.
The Cards added to the lead at the 60:03 mark when Payne dribbled the center of the circle and dished a pass to sophomore Casey Diener who was posted up on the left side of the cage.
Diener struck again two minutes later on a feed from sophomore Janelle Avila to give Louisville a 5-1 lead.
Iowa's Kelly Slattery connected on a rebound to make the score 5-2 with 4:10 remaining in the game.
Louisville sophomore goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller posted three saves in the win. The Cards outshot the Hawkeyes 15-8 and held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners in the game.
Iowa's Munley registered two stops in the loss. The Hawkeyes fall to 10-7 on the season.
U of L (13-6) will face host No. 11 Michigan Sunday at 1 p.m.
