
No. 16 Field Hockey Tops Rutgers 8-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Sophomore Janelle Avila scored three goals and junior Jessica Javelet had two goals as the 16th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated visiting Rutgers 8-1 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Friday at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 11-6 and close the BIG EAST regular season with a 3-2 record. The Scarlet Knights fall to 6-10 (0-5).
Louisville got on the scoreboard early when senior Rachel Overton converted a penalty stroke just 2:01 into the game. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Casey Diener sent a rebound off of Rutgers goalkeeper Rosalyn Wentko into the cage to give the Cards a 2-0 lead. Junior Jessica Javelet tipped junior Lisa Wasser's penalty corner shot to increase U of L's lead to 3-0 at the 12:06 mark. A minute later, Avila dribbled the ball in from the 25 yard line and delivered a shot into the right side of the cage to give the Cards a 4-0 lead. Javelet connect on another feed from Wasser at the 23:02 mark to give U of L a 5-0 lead going into halftime. At the break Louisville, outshot Rutgers 8-0 and held a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The Cardinals came out firing in the second half as senior Jen Payne tipped a shot by Javelet to make it a 6-0 game at the 36:05 mark.
Rutgers got on the board at three minutes later when Kara Spector connected on a penalty corner with assists from Jocelyn Mattina and Corinne Bach to make the score 6-1.
Junior Jen Kastelic sent a pass from the left side of the cage to Avila who was posted up on the right corner to increase the Cards' lead to 7-1 at the 62:34 mark. Avila completed her second hat trick in as many games when she dove to connect on Diener's cross in front of the cage at the 66:48 mark for the final 8-1 score.
Louisville's goalkeeper sophomore Marie-Claire Heller (11-6) allowed one goal in the win. The Cardinals outshot the Scarlet Knights 15-2 in the game and held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners.
Rutgers' Wentko collected five save in the loss. The Scarlet Knights will play Radford Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
"I was happy with the way we responded to last week's loss," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We put together a solid game today and everybody is continuing to work hard to reach our goals."
The Cardinals will celebrate senior day in their final home game of the season when they face Radford Sunday at 1 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
