BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - Indiana's Lydia Schrott scored with 1:08 remaining in the game as seventh-ranked Indiana edged the 13th ranked Louisville field hockey team 3-2 Tuesday at IU's Mellencamp Pavilion.
The teams battled throughout the entire first half, but Indiana's Mallory Reabold took advantage of a fast break pass from Nikki Orciuch and got past Louisville goalkeeper sophomore Marie-Claire Heller to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead at the 14:21 mark.
IU took the 1-0 lead into halftime. At the break, the teams had six shots each with Louisville holding a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The Hoosiers pulled ahead 2-0 five minutes into the second half when Orciuch netted an unassisted goal.
The Cards got on the scoreboard when junior Lisa Wasser connected on a rebound off of sophomore Janelle Avila's shot to make it a 2-1 game at the 24:37 mark.
Louisville capitalized on another penalty corner to tie the game at 2-2 midway through the second half when senior Rachel Overton powered a shot past IU goalkeeper Haley Exner. Junior Jen Kastelic and senior April White assisted on the goal.
Indiana's Schrott scored the game-winner off of a blocked shot when the Hoosiers were awarded a penalty corner with just over a minute remaining in the contest. The Cards were able to get down the field in the last minute, but were stymied by the Hoosier defense.
Louisville's Heller posted five saves in the loss. The Cards outshot the Hoosiers 15-12 and held a 12-4 advantage in penalty corners. IU's Exner collected 11 saves in the cage to get the win. IU improves to 12-1 on the season.
"Indiana is a very talented team and a tough opponent. They have definitely earned their top 10 ranking," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "This was a very hard fought game and we certainly had our chances, but were unable to capitalize on them. We still have a lot of field hockey left to play and will use this experience to become a stronger team."
U of L (10-5) will travel to Villanova for a BIG EAST Conference game Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
