
Field Hockey Tops Central Michigan 4-1

EAST LANSING - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Central Michigan 4-1 in Mid-American Conference action Saturday at Michigan State's Field Hockey Complex.
The Cardinals opened the scoring just over two minutes into the match when senior Kimberly Hughes delivered an unassisted goal at the 2:48 mark.
CMU answered two minutes later with a goal from Alicia Balanesi to tie the game at 1-1. Stasia Burroughs was credited with the assist. Louisville regained the lead in the 22nd minute with another unassisted goal, this time by sophomore Jessica Javelet.
The Cardinals extended their lead with less than four minutes to go in the first half. Louisville freshmen Casey Diener and Missy Briery got free for a two on one breakaway with Briery diving to tip into the net a pass from Diener. Louisville took the 3-1 lead into halftime.
U of L added another insurance goal with a little over three minutes to go in the match when Javelet scored her second goal of the match, assisted by junior April White.
The Cardinals finished with the advantage in shots and penalty corners. They had 19 shots compared to eight for CMU and had five corners with CMU registering three. Cardinal goalkeeper freshman Marie-Claire Heller (2-2) posted six saves to earn the victory. CMU goalkeeper Sarah Mancuso made 10 saves in the loss. The Chippewas fall to 3-3 (1-1 MAC).
The Cardinals (3-6, 1-1) return home, where they will play host to Ohio State Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
