Louisville, Ky. - Head Coach Bobby Petrino and selected players made themselves available to the media for the annual football press conference on Monday. They discussed the upcoming 2004 season-opener with the University of Kentucky this Sunday at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. After the UK game, the Cardinals travel to face Army on Saturday, September 11 at 1:00 p.m. Head coach Bobby Petrino:
"We're definitely getting excited about the game. Saturday we ended up with a mock game. It went well, and I thought we got a lot accomplished as far as everything we will go through with our routine leading up to the game and how we'll handle halftime. I think we got about 39 reps with each group and a little bit more on offense when you count the 2-minute stuff in there."
On injuries:
We're fairly healthy. Will Rabatin would be the one guy that's missed some practice time. Last week Will worked 3 days toward the end of the week as far as some of the movements that he will have to do and should be back full go on Tuesday but we'll just have to wait and see how ready he'll be to play. It'll be the probably the difference on whether Spitz plays guard or center is how Will's health is.
On the starting QB:
Stefan (LeFors) will start at quarterback for us. Stefan has done a great job. I wanted to make sure that everything through our 2 a-days and our camp that the focus was not on the quarterback position and I think we were able to accomplish that. Brian (Brohm) is an extremely talented young man. I think when he came in all the hype. I told his brother Jeff that he better be as good as advertised and he might be better. He's really a special young man and he's beeen able to pick up the offense and we're planning on getting him in the game. How much or when is yet to be determined. We're still working out all the details on how we'll do that, but we're definitely going to get him in the game at some point on Sunday.
On the quarterback competition:
"Well, I think what I did say is that there would be competition at the quarterback spot and they basically got the same amount of reps this summer. Early in the camp, Stefan took all the reps with the 1's and Brian took all the reps with the 2's and then as we got into it a little closer, Brian started getting some reps with the 1's basically so they could get used to his cadence and how he called the play in the huddle and so he could get used to throwing the ball to some of the 1 recievers, really just J.R. Russell because all the others rotate with the 1's and the 2's anyway,. I think it was very competitive. I think there were times when Stefan put a little pressure on himself and I think he was relieved when I told him he would be the starter. The pressure on yourself is not bad in practice, he needs to get relaxed and get ready for the game just like he did all last year."
