Field Hockey Shines in Alumnae Game

The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated the alumnae team 11-0 Saturday, August 21 at Trager Stadium.
Twenty six former Cardinals returned to play the 2004 squad in the preseason tune-up. Freshman Janelle Avila put the current Cards on the scoreboard five minutes into the game. Senior Suzanne Irwin connected on an assist from sophomore Carrie Jackson eight minutes later. Sophomore Meredith Edwards scored off of a Jessica Javelet assist and then added another goal less than a minute later to take a 4-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, freshman Laken Letellier scored with another Javelet assist four minutes into the half. Senior Kimberly Hughes netted a penalty stroke to give the current Cards a 6-0 advantage. Letellier added another goal. Javelet, sophomore Stacy Becht, sophomore Jen Kastelic and sophomore Janeke DuBois also scored for U of L when the alumnae goalkeeper was pulled from the game.
"I was very pleased with the intensity we came out with today," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We executed everything we have worked on in practice this past week and I am very happy with the way we played. In addition to valuable preseason experience, this game is a wonderful way for us to catch up with and get to know with those who helped build our program. We look forward to this game every year."
The Cardinals will open the season at Michigan State, where they will face 2003 NCAA runner-up Duke on Saturday, August 28 at 11:30 a.m. U of L's home opener will be against Indiana on Friday, Sept. 17 at 3:00 p.m.
Louisville finished the 2003 season with a 13-10 record after winning the Mid-American Conference tournament and earning the program's first NCAA bid.
