
Cardinal Crew Announces Six Signees For 2004-05

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville rowing head coach Richard Ruggieri announced today the signing of six student-athletes to national letters-of-intent for the 2004-05 season. Kim Anderson, Laurel Cox, Kathryn Hagglund, Rachel Mersch, Breanne O'Connor and Elise Villareal are set to join the Cardinal crew as classes begin on Aug. 23. "We feel like this is a very talented group of signees and a strong recruiting class for our program," said Ruggieri, who enters his fifth season at the helm of the Cardinals' rowing program. "Our coaching staff believes this group of newcomers can make a very positive impact on our team and really help us in the near future." Anderson, who has three years of rowing experience, is a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, where she is a member of the Thunder Bay Rowing Club and the Westgate C&V Institute. Cox is a Louisville native and a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy where she was the varsity coxswain in 2003-04. Hagglund, a native of London, Ontario, comes to U of L after a strong prep rowing career at Saunders High School where she was also a member of the London Rowing Club and the 2004 Canadian CanAmMex team. Mersch comes to Louisville from Villa Hills, Ky., where she rowed for the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club and attended Notre Dame Academy. O'Connor, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, and a member of the St. Mary's High School Boat Club and Leander Boat Club, brings four years of rowing experience to the Cards' program. Villareal is a native of Wilder, Ky., where she attended Saint Ursula Academy and served as coxswain for the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club. The Cardinal crew will open the 2004 fall season on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Murray State.
