Louisville, Ky. - Sophomore Justin Rascati tossed four touchdown passes and senior Stefan LeFors three as the University of Louisville football team conducted its first official spring scrimmage at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium on Saturday.
The Cardinals scrimmaged for about an hour and a half on the turf, before ending the day with brief work by the Cardinal placekicking units.
Rascati looked sharp, completing 21-of-29 passes for 337 yards, including a 60-yard bomb down the sidelines to sophomore Jimmy Riley on the second series of the scrimmage. Rascati also tossed scoring strikes of 14 yards to red-shirt freshman Reggie Bradshaw, seven yards to senior Adam McCauley and 38 to junior Robert Haskins.
On the first series of the game, LeFors, who was 15-of-24 for 257 yards, directed the Cardinals on a seven-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off by an 11-yard run by junior Eric Shelton. Shelton finished as the game's top rusher with 17 carries for 85 yards and two scores.
LeFors threw a one-yard touchdown pass to McCauley, a 20-yarder to senior J.R. Russell and a five-yarder to sophomore Wayne Riles. Senior Joshua Tinch was the top receiver, catching three passes for 112 yards, while Russell caught five for 96.
The defense forced a pair of fumbles early in the scrimmage and made the offense kick a 42-yard field goal by red-shirt freshman Arthur Carmody, who's looked solid this spring. He also booted a 22-yard field goal in the scrimmage.
Red-shirt freshman Preston Smith led the Cards with six tackles, while senior Kerry Rhodes and junior Montavious Stanley each recorded five stops.
The Cardinals return to the practice fields on Tuesday and will hold another scrimmage next Saturday at Noon.
