LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the third consecutive year, the Kentuckiana area will be able to witness two of the region's top collegiate rowing programs as the University of Louisville and the Kentucky Derby Festival will host the Derby Collegiate Rowing Championships this Sunday.
The event will begin at 11 a.m. at the U of L Boathouse located on River Road.
The format has been changed this year from the previous two events. Louisville and Murray State will square off in three 500-meter races, with the winning team to be crowned as the Kentucky State Champion.
"This will be a great opportunity for the Louisville community to once again get a taste of collegiate rowing," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "Fans who have not seen the sport will find it an exciting one to watch and that the art of rowing is pleasing to the eye when done with proper technique. We have had great success with this event the past two years, and this one should be even better as fans will be able to view the entire race from the shore."
Tickets to the event are $5 per person with a Derby Festival Pegasus Pin, which are available for $3. Tickets can be purchased by calling the U of L Ticket Office at 502-852-5151. Tickets and Derby Festival Pegasus Pins will also be available on the day of the event at the Boathouse. Lunch will be provided.
Free parking will be available along River Road parallel to Waterfront Park and the Boathouse. Additional parking on a first-come basis will be available in Waterfront Park next to the Boathouse and the Children's Play Area (Phase II).
Fans are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the regatta to allow time to walk from your parking spot to the Boathouse. Shuttle service will be provided along River Road for those parking away from the venue. Spectators can also be dropped off at the Boathouse.
Last year, more than 600 fans were able to watch aboard the Belle of Louisville as the Cardinals defeated the Racers in all six races.
Louisville and Murray State are the only two schools in Kentucky that sponsor NCAA Division I rowing.
