Cardinal Football To Open Spring Drills on March 25

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- - The University of Louisville's spring football practices begin Thursday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m. at the Cardinal practice fields.
The Cardinals, under second-year head coach Bobby Petrino, will practice the NCAA-mandated 15 times, concluding with the annual Spring Football Game presented by UPS on Friday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Practices are open to the public and the media. Please contact the U of L sports information office at (502) 852-6581 for scheduled practice times.
U of L returns 44 lettermen in 2004 while losing only 15 from last year's 9-4 team, which lost 49-28 to Miami (OH) in the GMAC Bowl.
Nine starters return on offense and seven are back on the defensive side of the football.
Starters returning on offense include senior awards candidate J.R. Russell at wide receiver, quarterback Stefan LeFors and running back Lionel Gates. Senior wide receiver Joshua Tinch, junior running back Eric Shelton, junior wide receiver Broderick Clark, and junior offensive linemen Travis Leffew and Jason Spitz are also back, while sophomore tackle Renardo Foster rounds out th returning starters on offense.
Starters returning on defense are senior cornerback Antoine Harris, senior safeties Brent Johnson and Kerry Rhodes, senior defensive end Marcus Jones, senior linebacker Robert McCune, senior defensive lineman Tyrone Saterfield, and junior linebacker Brandon Johnson and junior defensive tackle Montavious Stanley.
The Cardinals have two new coaches on staff as Mike Cassity takes over as the defensive coordinator, while Tony Levine will coach the outside linebackers.
U of L will open its season at home versus Kentucky on September 5.
