
Cardinal Rowers Win Two Against Duke

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team won two of four races Saturday morning against Duke in the Cardinals' season-opening event.
The 2000-meter races were held on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
"The race with Duke was a solid start to the season," said fourth-year head coach Richard Ruggieri. "With no water time this past week, our athletes are excited to clean up their stroke and continue to improve. Duke is a very good program and one that will help us find our early race speed."
Louisville won the Novice 8+ race with a time of 7:12.6, giving the Cardinals their first-ever win over Duke in that event. The Blue Devils finished at 7:45.9.
The Cards' boat was comprised of Dana Osoffsky, Beth Daunhauer, Martha Shults, Melissa Grieshaber, Jen Allen, Stephanie Baker, Charly Day, Katie Prince and coxswain Jenna Sample.
In the Varsity 4+ competition, both Louisville crews finished ahead of the lone Duke boat. The Cardinals' A boat won the race in 7:31.2, while the U of L B boat was 10 seconds behind at 7:41.7. Duke was third in 7:53.0.
The Cards' winning boat consisted of Brooke Spence, Nicole Alderson, Amelia Buhts, Lisa Terreberry and coxswain Sample. The B boat was Leslie Walters, Allison Kemphaus, Carmen Noltemeyer, Stephanie George and coxswain Christy Ochsner.
Duke won the Varsity 8+ race with a time of 6:39.8, seven seconds ahead of Louisville (6:46.7). Duke's top varsity boat is ranked 18th in the country.
Ochsner coxed the crew of Walters, Kemphaus, Noltemeyer, Terreberry, Buhts, Alderson, Spence and George.
The Blue Devils also won the Second Varsity 8+ race with a time of 6:42.5, edging the Cardinals by nine seconds (6:51.7).
In the Louisville shell was Colleen Blaschuk, Lia Renaud, Jessica Grigsby, Mandy Moore, Osoffsky, Karen Bramer, Olivia Brittain, Daunhauer and coxswain Diana Golub.
The Cardinals will race Minnesota Sunday morning in Oak Ridge before spending the rest of the week in spring training on Melton Lake.
"Minnesota will be a challenge for us tomorrow," said Ruggieri. "Hopefully the racing today will bring us up another level."
