LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 2004 University of Louisville football team will face one of its most challenging schedules with six road games and will play three bowl teams in its final season as a member of Conference USA. U of L will begin play in the Big East Conference in 2005.
The Cardinals will make five national television appearances, including a Thursday night ESPN game against perennial national power Miami (Fla.) in the Orange Bowl on October 14, which was originally scheduled for Sept. 16. Louisville will open the season on national television against intrastate rival Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 5 in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Other home telecasts include a special Friday night game against South Florida on Oct. 22 and a Nov. 9, 10, 11 game against TCU. The other telecast is a matchup at Memphis on Nov. 2, 3 or 4. Times, dates and specific network information will be announced at a later date.
"Our 2004 schedule is intriguing with Kentucky at home and playing both Miami and North Carolina on the road," said head coach Bobby Petrino. "We play two of the Conference USA bowl teams on the road, which will be a challenge. Even though we only have five home games, we are very happy with the teams coming to Papa John's Cardinal Stadium this season."
The Cardinals and Wildcats will open the season for the 11th straight year and the fourth time at PJCS. Since resuming the series in 1994, Louisville owns a 6-4 series advantage, including a 40-24 win over the 'Cats in Lexington last season.
After its home opener, Louisville hits the road for three straight away games. U of L will open its final C-USA season when it travels to Army on Sept. 11 before visiting Tulane on Sept. 18, followed by a non-conference match-up with North Carolina on Sept. 25.
After the tough three-game road trip, the Cardinals return home on October 2 to host East Carolina before having 11 days off to travel to Miami to face the Hurricanes on Thursday, Oct. 14.
Following a weekend off on Oct. 16, the Cardinals return to PJCS to take on USF on Friday, Oct. 22, before playing three straight bowl teams from the 2003 season.
Louisville travels to Memphis on Nov. 2, 3 or 4 to try to avenge a 37-7 loss to the Tigers at PJCS last season. The Cardinals will close the season with two of its final three games at home. Louisville will host TCU, who handed the Cards a 31-28 defeat in Fort Worth last season, in a nationally-televised contest on Nov. 9, 10 or 11. The Cards hit the road for the final time with a visit to Houston on Saturday, Nov. 20 before closing the 2004 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 27 versus Cincinnati at PJCS.
Louisville garnered a 9-4 record in 2003 and advanced to its school-record sixth straight bowl appearance - a 49-28 loss to Miami (OH) in the GMAC Bowl.
