Men's Golf Seventh at Matlock Invite

LAKELAND, Fla. - Junior Brett Jones fired 3-under par 141 as the University of Louisville opened the 2004 spring men's golf season in seventh place after the first day of the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla., on Monday afternoon. The Cards fired 591, 15 strokes behind tournament leader Memphis.
Jones, after a slow fall, rebounded with a 70-71 to jump into a tie for second place after the first day. Jones is just three shots behind leader Greg Koch of Florida Southern who fired 6-under par, including a 68 in the second round. David Jeans of Memphis also shot 141.
Freshman Michael Giammaresi is in a tie for 20th after the first day, shooting 72-75=147, while Brent Holmes was also in the top 40 by carding 75-75=150 to place in a tie for 35th.
Freshman Mark Conlon is in a tie for 53rd with a 77-76=153, while junior Charlie Woo shot 79-78=157.
The final round will be played Tuesday morning at Grasslands Golf and Country Club.
