Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's golf team will open the 2004 spring season on Monday, February 16 at The Matlock Intercollegiate at Grasslands Golf and Country Club. It is a par-72, 7,065-yard course.
Two rounds will be played on that Monday, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. The third round will be played on Tuesday, with the first groups teeing off at 8:00 a.m., and the final wave going at 9:52.
Heading into his fifth season as the head coach, Mark Crabtree has seen progress in the University of Louisville men's golf program - and the 2004 campaign could be one of his best. With just one senior on the roster and two juniors, the 2004 Louisville men's golf team is ready to make its move with an experienced, yet still young squad.
The fortunes of the U of L golf team ride on the success of junior Brett Jones, who earned second team All-Conference USA accolades a year ago. After qualifying its first-ever golfer for the NCAA Tournament last season, Jones is ready to soar in his third season.
Jones, the school's career strokes leader, posted six top 10 finishes and three top five last season, including a second-place finish at the Baylor Invitational and the Johnny Owens Invitational. For his career, Jones has four top five finishes and nine top 10 appearances.
Junior Charlie Woo had an outstanding fall, finishing with a team best 72.5 average. Woo posted back-to-back top 10 finishes, placing fifth at the Kansas Fall Invitational and sixth at the Cardinal Intercollegiate. Woo showed signs of brillance last season with one top ten finish and ending the year with a 74.6 stroke average. He showed his ability when he tied for fifth-place at the ASU Indian Classic.
The Cardinals have a pair of talented freshmen in Michael Gimmaresi and Mark Conlon, who will make an immediate impact in their first season. Giammaresi carded a 15th-place finish in his first tournament as a member of the Cardinals and was ninth at the Cardinal Intercollegiate. He also played well this summer at the Dixie Amateur, finishing in 24th place.
At Wharton High School last year, he carded seven career wins at local tournaments, he three career wins at state tournaments and three top five finishes in national tournaments. Conlon has also played well last fall. He nearly won the Cardinal Intercollegiate with a third-place showing, firing a 216, including a 69 in the second round. A product of Lamar High School in Texas, Conlon captured the Star-Telegram Junior Boys Championship and the Fort Worth Junior Tournament.
