Cardinal Rowers Win Seven Medals at Head of the Licking Regatta

WILDER, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing team opened its 2003 fall campaign with seven medals at the Head of the Licking Regatta Saturday in Wilder, Ky. The event was hosted by the Cincinnati Rowing Club.
For the first time in the program's five-year history, the Cardinals raced with two Varsity 8+ crews and finished 1-2 in the Women's Open 8+ race. The Louisville "B" team finished the three-mile course in 20:13, a minute faster than the U of L "A" crew (21:26).
The gold medal "B" team was comprised of Mandy Botelho, Stephanie George, Carmen Noltemeyer, Natalie Richards, Karen Bramer, Miranda Popp, K.C. McCrocklin, Courtney Graham and coxswain Christy Ochsner.
The silver medal "A" team was Leslie Walters, Lia Renaud, Brooke Spence, Lisa Terreberry, Amelia Buhts, Nicole Alderson, Jessica Grigsby, Allison Kemphaus and coxswain Diana Golub.
In the Women's Open 4+ race, the Cards' "A" team won the six-boat race with a time of 21:49, while the Louisville "B" boat won a bronze medal with a time of 23:20. The "A" boat consisted of Buhts, George, Noltemeyer, Kemphaus and Ochsner. The "B" team was Botelho, Richards, Olivia Brittain, Popp and coxswain Jenna Sample.
Louisville entered four crews in the Women's Open 2- race and claimed the top four spots. Terreberry and Spence won the event with a time of 23:27. Walters and Renaud teamed up to win the silver medal, while Buhts and Kemphaus won bronze. Alderson and Grigsby placed fourth.
"We had a solid start to our season," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "We won every event we entered, so that was obviously pleasing. We just need to continue to improve as we prepare ourselves for next weekend's big race in West Virginia."
The Cardinals return to action next Saturday when they travel to Morgantown, W.Va., for the Head of the Mon Regatta.
