Cardinal Rowers Finish First Among U.S. Schools at Prestigious Head of the Charles

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Louisville rowing team finished tops among schools from the United States and second overall in the Collegiate 8+ race Sunday at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
The Cardinals completed the 3-mile course in 17 minutes 1.362 seconds to finish ahead of every U.S. team in the 38-boat race and win a silver medal. Queen's University of Canada was the only team to defeat Louisville as it won the race in 16:47.321.
Louisville's crew was comprised of Leslie Walters, Allison Kemphaus, Lisa Terreberry, Lia Renaud, Amelia Buhts, Nicole Alderson, Jessica Grigsby, Stephanie George and coxswain Christy Ochsner.
"This group came together magnificently, especially considering we had a last minute change in our lineup due to an illness," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "I couldn't be any happier with this team. To finish ahead of all U.S. crews at this prestigious event is a tremendous accomplishment."
The Head of the Charles, first held in 1965, is the largest two-day regatta in the world. Hosted by the Cambridge Boat Club, the event annually draws nearly 300,000 spectators and 7,000 athletes to the banks of the Charles River.
Louisville wraps up its fall season next Saturday at the Head of the Elk Regatta in Elkhart, Ind.
