Louisville, Ky. - University of Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino named five captains for the upcoming 2003 season on Saturday at the team's Annual Media Day.
In a vote by the team, seniors Ronnie Ghent and Dan Koons were selected on offense, while seniors Josh Minkins and Rod Day, and junior Robert McCune were the defensive selections.
Ghent, a three-time All-Conference USA selection, is slated to be the starter at tight end. Last season, Ghent caught 25 passes for 206 yards before suffering an injury in the seventh game. Koons took over at center last season, and was one of two linemen to start all 13 games for the Cards.
Minkins is the team's most experienced cornerback, having been a starter the last two seasons. He recorded 58 tackles and one interception last year.
Day, a second team All-Conference performer last season, recorded 101 tackles from his linebacker position, and will be the starter at linebacker.
McCune, the lone junior captain, will be a starter at one of the linebacker positions. He was credited with 48 tackles a year ago.
The Cardinals resume practice Sunday at 3:30 p.m. on the Cardinal practice fields.
