Field Hockey Falls to Old Dominion 3-1

NORFOLK, Va. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team opened the 2003 season with a 3-1 loss to Old Dominion. The Monarchs were NCAA semifinalists and the nation's top-ranked team in the final 2002 National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. Louisville finished the season at No. 11.
The Cardinals took 1-0 lead when senior Shelby Summers scored on a breakaway with 16:52 remaining in the first half.
Old Dominion's Janelle Engle connected on a feed from Angie Loy during a penalty corner to tie the contest with 5:52 left in the first half.
Midway through the second half, Loy scored the game-winner on another penalty corner to put the Monarchs up 2-1 with 17:30 left in the game.
Old Dominion's Chilly Banuelos added an insurance goal with under a minute left to play to make the score 3-1.
Louisville goalkeeper senior Christy Hershey took the loss, allowing three goals and posting four saves. Old Dominion's Tina Walker allowed one goal and recorded two saves in the game.
The Monarchs outshot the Cardinals 10-4 and held a 5-2 penalty corner advantage.
"Old Dominion is a very tough opponent and is always one of the top teams in the nation, but we played them well," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "I am pleased with the team's effort."
U of L (0-1) will travel to Williamsburg, Va., to play William & Mary (1-0) Sunday at noon.
