For the first time in program history, the University of Louisville field hockey team has been picked by league coaches as the favorite to win the Mid-American Conference field hockey championship.
"It is an honor to be chosen by the MAC coaches to be the preseason favorite for the first time in school history," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We're going to work very hard to earn that same honor at the end of season."
Last season, the Cards shared the regular season championship with Central Michigan and finished with a 13-8 overall record. After starting the season ranked fourth in the nation, they finished the year ranked No. 11 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's final poll.
U of L will return 15 letterwinners from that team including All-American goalkeeper senior Christy Hershey, two-time All-MAC honoree senior Olivia Netzler and 2002 All-MAC team members senior Desire' Miller and junior Kim Hughes.
The Cardinals will open the season at 2002 NCAA semifinalist Old Dominion on August 30. The Cardinals will play their home opener against Boston University on Sept. 6 at Trager Stadium at noon.
