Louisville, Ky. - Freshmen Will Hanna (The Woodlands, Texas) and Troy Hawkins (Elizabethtown, Ky.) of the University of Louisville men's golf team became the third and fourth players to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Open, which will be played on August 18-24 at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.
Sophomores Charlie Woo and Brett Jones are the other U of L qualifiers for this prestigious event.
Playing at the Black Horse Country Club in Houston, Texas, Hanna fired a -1 under 71-72 = 143 to finish tied for fifth, but the freshman needed to work overtime to qualify. Finishing in a three-way tie for the final spot, Hanna won a one-hole playoff hitting his tee shot on the green and burying the birdie put.
Hawkins qualified by placing second overall with 71-67 = 138 at the Madisonville Country Club in Madisonville, Ky.
"I think it's great for the program to have four players qualify," said Hawkins. "It says a lot about the type of program that we have here at Louisville."
"I'm very pleased and excited that the progress that these young players are making," said head coach Mark Crabtree. "It's great to have two sophomores and two freshmen playing in this prestigious event. This will be an awesome experience for these players and they need to work hard in the next couple of weeks to get their games ready."
