
Spence Named to CRCA All-Region Second Team

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville sophomore rower Brooke Spence has been selected to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) South Region Second Team and juniors Allison Kemphaus and Leslie Walters earned CRCA Scholar-Athlete distinction for the 2002-03 academic year.
Spence began the spring season in the two-seat in the Cardinals' Varsity 8+ boat before moving back to the six-seat midway through the season. The North Vancouver, British Columbia, native led the Cards to nine first-place finishes in 18 total races in the spring.
Kemphaus earned scholar athlete honors for the second straight season. The Ft. Wright, Ky., native carries a 3.86 grade point average with a major in health and human performance. Earlier this spring, she was voted to the Verizon Academic All-District At-Large Second Team.
Walters, who also earned scholar athlete distinction for the second consecutive year, holds a 3.83 grade point average and is majoring in economics. A native of Hodgenville, Ky., she rowed stroke for the Varsity 8+ crew this spring.
"I am really proud of these three individuals," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "They have all worked extremely hard, both on the water and in the classroom, and it is great to see them honored for their efforts."
The CRCA All-America and All-Region awards are designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains. Honorees must meet eligibility rules as defined by her institution and have participated in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the first varsity boat, and the student-athlete's head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
For each region, up to 12 rowers and, if nominated, a coxswain received first team honors, with the same number eligible for second team honors. The CRCA All-America first and second teams will be selected by the regional chairpersons from the rowers who have received All-Region first team honors.
The National Scholar-Athlete award is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by her institution, participating in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility, participating in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the varsity boat and owning a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade-point average through the fall semester of the current season, and the student-athlete's head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
