Needing only a marginal performance in the final tuneup before the NCAA Men's Golf Championships to capture the U of L record for single season stroke average, sophomore Brett Jones pieced together two of his best rounds of the season to surge into a tie for fifth-place, five shots behind the clubhouse leader, after two rounds of play at the 4th Annual Atlanta Intercollegiate.
With a 72.7 stroke average entering the final event of the regular season, Jones was nearly a full stroke below the record average of 73.69 set by former teammate Grant Sturgeon last season. The second team All-Conference USA selection but to rest any doubts about capturing the record on day one at the Atlanta Intercollegiate, presented by Warehouse 1 and hosted by Georgia State, as the 2001 Conference USA Freshman of the Year posted rounds of 68 and 69 at the par-73, 6,899-yard Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga.
Playing in a competitive 12-team field including seven of the top-30 ranked teams in the nation and three of the top five players in the nation, Jones sits tied for fourth place with Bruce McDonald of Charleston, one shot behind Kasper Jorgenson of Georgia State and Richard Scott of Georgia, and five shots behind clubhouse leader Camilo Villegas of Florida.
If Jones finishes among the top five at the event, it will mark his fourth top-five finish of the season, tying Steve Honchell and Kris Maffet for the second-highest single season tally and falling just one shy of Jay Davis' school record. If Jones finishes among the top 10 at the event, it will mark his seventh top-10 finish of the season, tying Jay Davis (twice) for the second-highest total in school history.
As a team, the Cards enter the final round of play in 11th-place with a two-round 593, 36 shots behind the pace set by Florida (557), the nation's ninth-ranked team. Sophomore Charlie Woo is tied for 28th after rebounding from an opening-round 79 with a strong second-round 67. Freshmen Tim Powell (74-82), Will Hanna (77-81) and Matthew Britt (80-78) sit in 59th and tied for 61st, respectively.
