While proving to be strong finishers in each event this spring, the University of Louisville men's golf team has had trouble getting out of the blocks and that trend continued on Friday as the Cards shot an opening round 295 and then rebounded with a second round 289 to tie host school Marshall for seventh place after the first day of action at the Marshall Invitational.
Sophomore Mark Anderson led the second-round charge for the Cards as he carded a three-under-par 68 to rebound from an opening round 75. Anderson enters Saturday's final round tied for 16th-place with a one-over 143, seven shots off the pace set club clubhouse leader Matt Kohn of Kentucky.
Back in the lineup after missing the last event due to illness, freshman Tim Powell was the most consistent Cardinal golfer as he carded rounds of 73 and 72 to pull into a tie for 24th-place heading into the final round.
Sophomore Charlie Woo, who has seen his time in the lineup limited due to recent struggles on the course, displayed the form that allowed him to capture titles in two of Canada's biggest amateur events over the summer as he carded rounds of 74 and 73 to pull into a tie for 28th-place.
Head coach Mark Crabtree has been looking for production from his lineup to compliment the play of standout Brett Jones, who ranked No. 19 nationally after posting a 71.9 stroke average during the fall season, ironically, on the day when the Cards posted their most consistent performance of the season, it was Jones who pulled up the rear as he carded rounds of 73 and 76 to earn a tie for 44th-place heading into Saturday's final round.
As a team, the Cards head into Saturday tied for seventh out of 16 teams and trail clubhouse leader Illinois by 28 shots.
