Cardinal Rowers Advance to Semifinals at SIRA Championships

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville rowing team had a pair of strong showings in the preliminary heats at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta Friday, advancing to the semifinals in both races.
The Cardinals' Varsity 8+ crew, seeded third in the 23-team competition, won its heat with a 2,000-meter time of 6:41.2, edging runnerup SMU by two seconds. The Cards' time was the second fastest on the day, behind only top-seeded Tennessee's time of 6:36.1.
In the Novice 8+ race, the Cardinals won their heat by five seconds with a time of 7:09.3. George Mason finished runnerup. U of L's time was the fifth fastest among the 17 teams.
Rowing continues on Melton Hill Lake Saturday, as the semifinals for all races will be held between 7:30-11 a.m. The top three finishers from the semifinal heats will qualify for grand finals, while the fourth through sixth positions move on to petite finals. All petite and grand finals are scheduled between 3:15-5:50 on Saturday afternoon.
