The University of Louisville men's golf team was on fire last summer and as the weather heats up around the country, the Cards are beginning to regain that hot summer form as Brett Jones, Charlie Woo and Mark Anderson sparked a terrific second-round 289, the low score of the round, to pull the Cards into third place, nine shots behind clubhouse leader North Texas, heading into Tuesday's final round at the ASU Indian Classic.
Staying true to form, the Cards got out of the gates slowly with a first-round 295, placing them in a tie for ninth-place, but caught fire behind strong rounds from Jones and Woo to tie clubhouse leader North Texas for the best score in the second round and pull into contention entering the final round of play on the par-72, 6,539-yard course at the Ridge Point Country Club in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Anderson was the story for the Cards in the opening round as he ranked among the clubhouse leaders with a two-under-par 70. The sophomore struggled to a second-round 76 and sits in a four-way tie for 22nd-place with a two-over 146. However, just as Anderson was cooling off, Jones and Woo were catching fire.
Picking up where Anderson left off, Jones followed an opening-round 73 with a second-round 70 to pull into a seven-way tie for ninth-place with a one-under-par 143. Woo caught fire with a season-low 68 in the second round to rebound from an opening-round 75 to pull into a tie with Jones for ninth-place with the second-lowest score of the second round.
Freshman Brent Holmes is tied for 64th-place at 10-over-par 154 after shooting consecutive 77s while fellow freshman Tim Powell is tied for 82nd-place at 15-over 159 after carding rounds of 84 and 75.
