KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville rowing team won two of four races against the University of Tennessee Saturday in Knoxville. The races were held on the Tennessee River.
The Cardinals picked up their first win of the day in the First Novice 8+ race. Louisville finished the 2000-meter course in 7:06.0, seven seconds ahead of the Lady Vols (7:13.3). The U of L crew was comprised of Shannon Gilland (cox), Mandy Botelho, Natalie Richards, Amelia Buhts, Miranda Popp, K.C. McCrocklin, Jessica Gaul, Olivia Brittain and Courtney Graham.
In the Varsity 4+ competition, Louisville won its third win in four races this spring when the Cardinals defeated UT by five seconds. U of L came in at 7:31.1, with Tennessee following at 7:36.1. Diana Golub coxed the crew of Stephanie Hutton, Lisa Terreberry, Brooke Spence and Stephanie George.
The Cardinals came up a bit short in the Varsity 8=+ race, with UT winning by 10 seconds in 7:19.8. The Lady Vols also won the Second Novice 8+ competition.
"Our Varsity 4+ crew rowed very, very well," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "The Varsity 8+ raced well, but they need more speed, while the Novices rowed aggressively. I look forward to watching these boats gain more speed as we continue to prepare for the SIRAs (Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association) in three weeks."
The Cardinals return to action next weekend when they travel to California for the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
