Coming off a blistering fall season and a record-setting performance in the spring season-opener, University of Louisville men's golf coach Mark Crabtree had high expectations for his young Cardinal lineup in the second event of the season, but, a tough course at the TPC of Myrtle Beach turned his young squad away as the U of L golfers slipped to ninth place in the third and final round of the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
The Cards posted rounds of 304, 306 and 305 to finish in ninth place with a 915, 42 shots off the pace set by tournament champion Arkansas, which posted a nine-over-par 873 for the event. U of L finished seven shots behind fellow Conference USA member Memphis (908), but was able to top fellow league members East Carolina (918) and Charlotte by three and 10 shots respectively.
Brett Jones, who finished tied for 15th-place, was the Cards' top finisher as he recovered from an opening round 78 with rounds of 72 and 73 to finish with a seven-over-par 223, 10 shots of the pace set by medalist Brendon De Jonge (213) of Virginia Tech.
Freshman Tim Powell continued to be a bright spot since joining the lineup midway through the fall season. The Lake Worth, Fla., native was consistent throughout the event, carding rounds of 75, 76 and 77 to finish tied for 30th with a 12-over-par 228.
Fellow freshman Will Hanna was also impressive as he sandwiched rounds of 72 and 77 around a second-round 78 to finish tied for 36th with a 14-over 230. Sophomores Charlie Woo and Mark Anderson, who teamed with Jones to form the nation's fifth-ranked freshman class a year ago, struggled badly as Woo finished tied for 69th-place with a 24-over 240 and Anderson slumped to a tie for 75th with a 26-over 242.
Competing as a individual, freshman Brent Holmes fired rounds of 76, 80 and 76 to finish tied for 43rd-place with a 16-over-par 232.
The Cards will return to action at the El Diablo Intercollegiate hosted by Marshall University on March 15 and 16.
