Head coach Mark Crabtree will be looking for a more consistent performance from his young Cardinal squad when the University of Louisville men's golf team swings into action in the second event of the spring season at the Coastal Carolina Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University at the TPC of Myrtle Beach on March 10-11.
Coming off an up-and-down season-opening performance at the Beau Chene Collegiate Classic in which the Cards sandwiched inconsistent rounds around a tournament record-setting second round, Crabtree is looking for two solid days of play from his young lineup consisting of three sophomores and a pair of freshmen.
"Obviously when you look at that second round at the Beau Chene, you get a good feel of how well this group can play when they're firing on all cylinders," Crabtree said. "This group has the potential to be very good, but we are going to need contributions from the top of the lineup on down during all three rounds."
Chasing the U of L record for single season stroke average, sophomore Brett Jones will be looking to rebound from a disastrous final round in the season opener. Tied for third entering the final round of the season-opener after firing a career-low 66 in the second round , Jones fell out of contention on the final day after carding a career-high 78 to finish tied for 16th place.
Joining Jones atop the lineup are fellow sophomores Mark Anderson and Charlie Woo, both of whom will look to get back on track following dissapointing finishes at the Beau Chene. Anderson will look to regain his hot summer and impressive fall form, while Woo will look to rebound from a dissapointing fall season. Rounding out the lineup are a pair of freshmen in Tim Powell and Will Hanna, while fellow freshman Brent Holmes will compete as an individual.
The Cards will compete in a 14-team field featuring fellow Conference USA members East Carolina and Memphis, in addition to host school Coastal Carolina, Arkansas, Furman, Michigan, Old Dominion, Central Florida, UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Charlotte, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia Tech and Washington State.
The event will feature two 18-hole rounds on Monday followed by a third and final round of 18 on Tuesday on the par 72, 6,950 yard TPC of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C.
