Coming off a summer full of sun, fun and success, the University of Louisville men's golf team will begin the 2002-03 campaign at the second annual Mid Pines Intercollegiate tournament, hosted by UNC Greensboro, on September 9-10 in Southern Pines, NC.
"We are very excited about the upcoming season, especially with the success our guys enjoyed over the summer," said head coach Mark Crabtree. "We showed a lot of progress and had some success in some of the top amateur events in both the U.S. and Canada. It will be interesting to see if we can keep that momentum rolling into the upcoming season."
The Cards will roll into the event, in which they placed 4th out of 14 teams in 2001, with a lineup featuring 2001 Conference USA Freshman of the Year Brett Jones, Mark Anderson and Charlie Woo, a sophomore trio which ranked No. 5 nationally in stroke average according to the Golfstat Freshman Class Impact Rankings. Joining the trio will be junior Matt Bascom, who helped the Cards to a third-place finish at the C-USA Championships, and sophomore Matthew Britt from DeSales High School in Louisville and most recently Morehead State.
The two-day, three-round event features 14 teams, including NCAA men's golf championship qualifier Virginia Commonwealth. In addition to VCU, Furman, California, Wichita State, East Carolina, Old Dominion, all of who finished last season ranked in the top 100, will participate. Ball State, Central Florida, Davidson, Marshall, Richmond, Charlotte and host UNC Greensboro round out the field.
The tournament will be held on the Mid Pines course (Par 72 -- 6,528 yards). The first round begins with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. on Monday, September 9, with the second round scheduled to tee off at 12:30 p.m. The third and final round starts at 7:45 a.m. and an awards ceremony will take place immediately following Tuesday's play.
