
South Alabama Leads After Day One of Cardinal Intercollegiate

Paced by three players in the top 25, including the clubhouse leader, Ryan Gildersleeve, the University of South Alabama men's golf team holds a two-stroke lead over Southern Mississippi after two rounds of play at the U of L Cardinal Intercollegiate at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
Paced by a pair of 68s in the first two rounds, South Alabama jumped into the clubhouse lead with an eight-under-par (285-283) 568 after two rounds. Led by a balanced attack featuring four players in the top 20, including three who are tied for 16th-place, Southern Miss (282-288) is in hot pursuit of South Alabama with a six-under-par 570 heading into Tuesday's final round. Rhode Island (285-287) and Coastal Carolina (286-286) are also within striking distance tied for third place at four-under-par 572.
The host school Louisville (290-291) sits tied for seventh-place with fellow Conference USA member UAB (295-286) at five-over-par 581. Sophomore Mark Anderson is leading the way for the Cards with a three-under-par 141 (69-72) after firing a season-best 69 in the opening round. He is tied for sixth and trails Gildersleeve (68-68), the clubhouse leader, by five shots entering the final round. Fellow sophomore Brett Jones, the 2002 C-USA Freshman of the Year, is tied for 16th-place at one-under 143 (72-71).
Playing in his first collegiate event, freshman Will Hanna sits tied for 41st with a four-over 148 (74-74), while sophomore Charlie Woo is tied for 44th-place at five-over 149 (75-74). Junior Matt Bascom is tied for 70th at 157 (80-77), while sophomore Matthew Britt fired a seven-over 153 (78-75) as an individual competitor.
Tuesday's final round at the par-72 6,992-yard Cardinal Club will begin with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
