Carvalho wins 'A' singles at Kentucky's Charles Fluitt Invitational

LEXINGTON, Ky. - - University of Louisville tennis player senior Paulo Carvalho won the flight 'A' singles bracket at the University of Kentucky's Charles Fluitt Invitational. Junior Matt Mayer finished fifth in the flight and senior Harry Walsh placed ninth. Sophomore Sebastian Aspillaga took third in the 'B' singles bracket, freshman Jeremy Clark finished in fourth place and junior Jake Kirts finished seventh. Senior Cody Conley picked up a win over Kentucky's Matt Emery in the ranked flight.

Carvalho began the tournament Friday with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Eastern Kentucky's Ross Schliter. On Saturday, he posted a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Bennie Schmid of Morehead and defeated Vanderbilt's Zach Dailey 6-2, 6-2 to set up Sunday's championship match against Middle Tennessee's Brandon Allan. Carvalho took first place with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Also in flight A, Mayer defeated Vandy's Lewis Smith 6-1, 6-3 before falling to Middle Tennessee's All 6-4, 6-4. He then beat Vandy's Josh Tarkoff 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Morehead's Schmid 7-6(5), 6-4 for fifth place. Walsh lost to Vanderbilt's Dailey 6-1, 6-4. He then picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win 6-0, 7-5 over Middle Tennessee's Greg Pollack and a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 decision over Vandy's Lewis Smith to finish ninth in the flight.

Aspillaga opened flight 'B' play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Morehead's Alejandro Hernandez. ON Saturday, he defeated Kentucky's Alex Hume 6-3, 6-3, but lost to eventual 'B' champion Jens Pilgram-Larsen of Vanderbilt 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5. Aspillaga defeated teammate Clark 6-1, 7-6(5) for third place. Clark took fourth place after defeating Eastern's Alvin Cheng 6-3, 6-2 and falling to Kentucky's Datlow 6-4, 7-6(5) in the semifinals. Jake Kirts defeated Eastern's Billy Pfaffinger 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round Friday. He fell to Vandy's Pilgram-Larsen 7-6(5), 7-5 and then lost to Kentucky's Hume 6-4, 7-6(5) before defeating Morehead's Tomi Simola to finish seventh.

The Cardinals will host the fourth annual Louisville Fall Invitation Oct. 4-6 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
