Senior wide receiver Damien Dorsey was voted the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week by the league's media contingent after a strong day on Saturday in which he tallied a school-record 159 yards, including an 81-yard scamper for a score, on six punts in the Cards' conference-opening win at Army.
Dorsey, a diminutive 5-foot-7, 171-pound receiver from Anniston, Ala., helped the Cards take their first step towards claiming a third consecutive C-USA title with a marvelous day on special teams and at receiver. The 159 return yards bested the previous U of L record by 34 yards and ranks as the second-highest single game tally in C-USA history. The 81-yard return, which helped bust open a close game midway through the second quarter, is tied for the 10th-longest return in school history.
The shifty receiver also made his mark on the offensive side of the ball, hauling in five catches for 79 yards. After four games, he ranks third on the squad with 14 catches and second with 229 receiving yards.
In only his third game as the Cards' punt returner, Dorsey has proven to be a huge weapon on special teams. His 24.71 yard punt return average currently leads C-USA by over 10 yards and ranks No. 2 nationally.
Fellow wideout Dontay Spillman, who pulled down seven catches for 128 yards and a touchdown against Army, was named the C-USA Player of the Week by Collegefootballnews.com.
