Former Cardinal golfer Grant Sturgeon won his second pro title in as many events since graduating from the University of Louisville in May with a one-shot victory over Scott Porter of Lexington on the first playoff hole at the Fifth Third Bank Kentucky Open on Sunday.
Sturgeon, a 24-year-old Cave City native who claimed a victory last week in his first pro event at the Irvin Cobb Invitational in Paducah, finished the 54-hole event tied with Porter at 1-over-par 217 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club. The U of L career and single season stroke average record holder managed to pull out the victory on the first playoff hole despite shooting a bogey as Porter carded a double-bogey.
Sturgeon entered the final round trailing Adam Gary of Bowling Green by three shots but pulled even with the clubhouse leader by the turn and bested him by a stroke on the back nine. Porter trailed Sturgeon by three shots after 12 holes but birdied holes 13, 15 and 18 to force the playoff.
