University of Louisville golfer and Paducah native Brett Jones continued the hot play for the Cards over the summer win a three and one victory over Danny Green of Jackson, Tenn., in the first round of match play at the United States Amateur Public Links Championship.
Playing at the Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Mich., Jones advanced to the second round of the championships featuring some of the finest amateur golfers in the nation with his match play win. The sophomore-to-be, who enjoyed success earlier this summer with a fifth-place finish at the Southwestern Men's Amateur Championships, is one of 32 players remaining from a field which numbered 156 at the start of competition.
Jones, the 2002 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, ranked second on the Cards with a 73.76 stroke average last season, logging three top 10 finishes and ending the season only four strokes behind senior Grant Sturgeon who set a school record for single season stroke average. He will face Casey Lubahn of East Lansing, Mich., in the second round of match play at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday.
