
Adam Haley Selected In 13th Round of MLB Draft

LOUISVILLE, KY - University of Louisville Cardinal junior shortstop Adam Haley was tabbed by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 399th pick of the 2002 Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday. Haley, a graduate of Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville was selected as the 27th pick of the 13th round by the defending World Champions.
Haley was selected as the top defensive shortstop in Conference USA and the possessor of the best infield arm in a preseason poll conducted by Baseball America this season. He was also a member of the preseason All C-USA team. Injuries limited his play to just 37 of Louisville's 57 games this season, in which he hit .299 with four home runs and 17 RBI. In 2001, Haley lead the team with a .347 average.
Haley, who has a .301 career batting average in three seasons with the Cards, was the only U of L player or signee to be drafted Tuesday. If Haley does not sign a professional contract, he will be eligible to return to the Cards for his senior season.
Pitchers Sean Green(Colorado Rockies 10th round) and Brian Bentley(Boston Red Sox 20th) were the last Louisville players to be drafted when they were selected in the 2000 draft.
The first 23 rounds of the draft were completed on Tuesday, and the remaining picks will be made from noon to 6:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Any high school graduates that are not enrolled in college, all junior college players, college juniors and seniors and college players that are 21 years of age or older are eligible for the draft.
