Building on the success of strong freshman seasons, University of Louisville golfers Charlie Woo and Brett Jones continued a successful off-season for the Cards with strong showings at a pair of amateur events. Woo, a native of Toronto, Ontario, claimed a four-stroke victory at the Toronto Star Amateur Championship, while Jones, a native of Paducah, finished fifth out of 168 players at the Southwestern Men's Amateur Championship.
Woo, who ranked fourth on the Cards with a 76.41 stroke average during his freshman season, posted his first major win with a four-round, two-under-par 284 at the Lambton Golf and Country Club, four strokes better than the runner-up. With the victory, Woo automatically qualified for the Canadian Amateur Championship and the Greater Toronto Open on the Canadian Tour this summer. Additionally, Woo with play in the Ontario Amateur Championships at his home course next month.
"Charlie has come a long way since arriving on campus and has continued to make strides through the off-season," head coach Mark Crabtree said. "Our young guys are certainly going to provide a solid foundation for the future of this program and it's really exciting to see how fast they are progressing."
Jones, the Conference USA Freshman of the Year after ranking second on the Cards with a 73.76 stroke average, also has made strides during the off-season, finishing sixth out of 168 players at the Southwestern Men's Amateur Championship held at ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Jones, who logged three top 10 finishes and finished his freshman season only four strokes behind senior Grant Sturgeon's school record for single season stroke average, fired a four round 280 to finish eight strokes off the pace set by Nick Watney.
Building blocks for the future of head coach Mark Crabtree's U of L golf program, Woo and Jones teamed with Mark Anderson to give the Cards the nation's No. 5-ranked freshman class according to the Golfstat Freshman Class Impact Rankings. Anderson kicked off the off-season by emerging from a field of 72 competitors to gain one of five spots in the U.S. Open sectionals.
