LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville has been selected as the host site for the 2002 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship November 22 and 24 at Trager Stadium. In addition to the NCAA games, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association North/South Senior All-Star Games will take place on Nov. 23. The NFHCA contests will showcase the top field hockey seniors in NCAA Divisions I and II.
This marks the first national championship that the University of Louisville has hosted since the 1969 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four was held at Freedom Hall. The 2001 Field Hockey Championship was held at Kent State, making this the second consecutive season that a Mid-American Conference (MAC) field hockey team has hosted the national championship.
"We're so proud to be awarded the 2002 NCAA Field Hockey Championship," University of Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said. "It is a reflection of the level of our facility Trager Stadium and the enthusiasm that has been created by head coach Pam Bustin and the development of her program. We're looking forward to an exciting November."
Louisville (16-5, 7-3 MAC) finished the 2001 season ranked No. 14 in the nation in the NCAA Division I poll. U of L was ranked as high as No. 7 and stayed in the top 20 the entire season. Bustin earned 2001 MAC Coach of the Year honors. The Cardinals will open the 2002 season on Sept. 7 against No. 4 North Carolina at Temple University.
"I am thrilled that the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship will be in Louisville," said Bustin. "Not only is our playing surface optimal, but the university and city are pros at running such events in the first class manner that the Final Four deserves. It will be a blast for everyone who attends! What could be better for the sports enthusiast than to appreciate hard working, talented, determined student-athletes going for a national championship?"
The semifinal games will take place on Friday, Nov. 22 at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. with the final game slated for Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for each game are $10 for adults and $5 for students with a valid student I.D. Weekend passes are priced at $15 for adults and $7 for students. For more ticket information, contact the U of L ticket office at 502-852-5151.
