Back on track after a very strong outing last weekend at the Johnny Owens Invitational, senior Grant Sturgeon is looking to maintain his hot play as he heads into the 33rd Annual Marshall Invitational chasing the University of Louisville record for single season stroke average.
Already the school record holder with a 74.61 career stroke average, Sturgeon is looking to add his name to the record book once again, this time atop the school's list for single season stroke average. Coming off a tremendous fall season in which he posted a blistering 72.00 stroke average, the Cave City native stumbled out of the gates to start the spring season before righting the ship over the last two events.
Entering the Marshall Invitational, the final event before the Conference USA Championships, Sturgeon owns a 73.71 stroke average for the season, just slightly higher than the school record 73.69 average posted by Chris Campbell who concluded his Cardinal career last year.
In addition to Sturgeon's hunt for individual records, the squad, which is bolstered by a strong freshman class, is on pace to top the school record for single season team stroke average for the third time in three seasons under head coach Mark Crabtree. Heading into the Marshall Invitational, Cardinal golfers own a collective 296.07 average, nearly one and a half strokes better than the 297.49 posted by the 1999-00 squad in Crabtree's inaugural season at U of L.
Leading the charge for much of the season have been freshmen Brett Jones and Mark Anderson who are both on pace to finish the season ranked among the school's top five for single season stroke average. Jones, a native of Paducah, trails Sturgeon by only seven strokes on the season and has been the Cards' top finisher twice during the spring season. Anderson, who hails from Sioux Falls, S.D., has logged two top five finishes during the spring highlighted by a third-place finish two weeks ago at the El Diablo Intercollegiate.
Rounding out the lineup this weekend for the Cards are freshman Charlie Woo and redshirt freshman Nick Ferrara. Woo teamed with Jones and Anderson to give the Cards the fourth-best freshman stroke average in the country during the fall season according to the Golfstat Freshman Class Impact Rankings. After struggling early in the spring, Woo has turned in consecutive impressive performances in recent weeks. Not seeing any action during the fall or the first two events of the spring, Ferrara broke into the lineup at the Emerald Coast Collegiate and has been a fixture in the lineup in the two events since then.
The Marshall Invitational begins with two rounds on Friday and a final round on Saturday. Each day at the par-72 Huntington Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia, will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. The highly-competitive 20-team field includes: Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio, Ohio State, Toledo, Wisconsin, Wright State and Xavier.
