Continuing a trend that has hampered the team throughout the spring season, the University of Louisville men's golf team will have to overcome its opening-round struggles as the Cards slumped to 15th-place after the first two rounds of play at the 33rd Annual Marshall Invitational.
For the seventh consecutive event, the Cards find themselves trying to hurdle a poor opening round after carding a 24-over par 308 for the first 18 holes. As they have done for much of the season, the Cards rallied by shaving seven strokes off their opening-round score to conclude the opening rounds in 15th-place in the 20-team field, 22 strokes behind clubhouse leader Toledo.
Freshman Brett Jones leads U of L after carding a nine-over par 151 (74-77), 10 strokes off the pace set by Kenny Cook of Ball State. Jones sits in 34th-place, one stroke ahead of senior Grant Sturgeon (79-73) and freshman Charlie Woo (77-75) who are tied for 48th-place. Making his first appearance since the Xavier Invitational last October, sophomore Matt Bascom carded a 12-over 154 (78-76) while freshman Mark Anderson closed out the opening rounds with a 15-over par 157 (82-75).
The third and final round of the tournament is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 Saturday morning. The possibility of a frost delay exists for the third round as overnight temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.
