Senior Grant Sturgeon and freshman Brett Jones continued to pace the University of Louisville men's golf team with solid play at the Conference USA Championships and sophomore Matt Bascom chipped in with a career-best round, however, disappointing performances from freshmen Mark Anderson and Charlie Woo prevented the Cards from moving into contention heading into the final round of play at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Florida.
Chasing the U of L record for single season stroke average, both Sturgeon and Jones continued their solid play to stay among the clubhouse leaders after two rounds. Sturgeon shaved four strokes off his opening-round 74 to card a two-under-par 70 in the second round -- he is tied for 12th-place, one stroke behind Jones and a host of other players in sixth-place. Jones, who entered the day tied for fifth after carding a two-under-par 70 on Monday, fired a one-over 73 in the second round and trails clubhouse leader Bret Guetz of TCU by nine shots.
Head coach Mark Crabtree was pleased with the effort he got from his two leaders.
"I'm impressed with the way those two attacked the course today," Crabtree said. "We need those guys to come out and set the tone for the rest of the squad and that's exactly what they did today."
Stepping up in a big way was Bascom who carded a career-best 71, marking the first subpar round of his collegiate career.
"That's the best round of his career and he picked a great time to shoot it," Crabtree said about Bascom, who is tied for 27th with a two-round 148.
The Cards were poised to make a run at the title but were unable to find a solid fourth score as both Anderson and Woo, who carded 75s on Monday, fired an 80 and 81, respectively.
"We needed a good round from one of them and what we got today just wasn't good enough in a tough field like this," Crabtree said. "We really needed to be within five or six shots of the leaders heading into tomorrow ... now we've really got our work cut out for us."
The Cards, who entered the second round tied with Houston for fifth-place, fell into sole possession of sixth-place, four shots behind Houston in fifth and 14 shots behind clubhouse leader TCU. TCU and UAB, two of the nation's top 30 teams, own the top two spots on the leaderboard.
