The dynamic duo of freshmen Brett Jones and Mark Anderson maintained its hot play to pace the University of Louisville's men's golf team to fifth place after the first round of play at the Emerald Coast Collegiate hosted by West Florida University at Tiger Point Golf Course in Gulf Breeze, Florida.
Jones and Anderson, who have been the Cards' top two finishers in each of the team's two spring events, came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders as they shot 76 and 77, respectively, in the opening round of play.
Jones fired a 36 on the front nine and followed with a 40 on the back nine to card a 76, four shots off the pace set by David Buckley (72) of Drake. Anderson carded a 38 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine to finish one shot behind Jones in a four-way tie for 12th.
Senior Grant Sturgeon, who has struggled in two events this spring after posting a blistering 72.00 stroke average during the fall season, carded a 79 and sits in a 10-way tie for 21st place, seven shots off the pace.
Senior Dean Halterman followed a 38 on the front nine with a disappointing 42 on the back nine and sits in a four-way tie for 31st, eight shots off the pace.
Replacing freshman Charlie Woo, who has struggled in two spring events, in the lineup is redshirt freshman Nick Ferrara, who carded a 90.
As a team, the Cards sit in fifth-place with a 312, 11 shots off the pace set by host school West Florida.
