Sturgeon Leads Cards at Johnny Owens Invitational

Senior Grant Sturgeon continued to round back into the dominant form he displayed during the fall season as he fired an even-par 71 to lead the University of Louisville men's golf team to 10th-place after the opening round at the 17th annual Johnny Owens Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky at the University Club Golf Course in Lexington.

Sturgeon, who struggled through the first three events of the spring season after posting a blistering 72.00 stroke average during the fall, appears to be rounding back into form as he sits tied for sixth-place, four shots off the lead, after the first round of play. Sturgeon is no stranger to the Johnny Owens Invitational, having finished tied for fourth as a sophomore when the Cards claimed the 2000 championship.

Backed by an all-freshman crew comprised of Brett Jones, Nick Ferrara, Mark Anderson and Charlie Woo, Sturgeon and the Cards sit in 10th-place, 17 shots off the pace of 284 set by host school Kentucky.

Jones, who is tied for second on the squad with a 74.08 stroke average for the year, carded a four-over 75 and sits in a 10-way tie for 32nd. Anderson, who owns the Cards' top stroke average during the spring season and is coming off a third-place finish two weeks ago at the El Diablo Invitational, sits in a seven-way for 63rd with teammate Charlie Woo. Making his third consecutive appearance in the lineup, Nick Ferrara fired an impressive 77 and is tied for 54th.

The second round of play was cut short by inclement weather and will be resumed Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
