Cards in Contention After Two Rounds at El Diablo Intercollegiate

Freshman Mark Anderson fired a second-round 69 to lead the surging University of Louisville men's golf team to sixth-place after two rounds of play at the El Diablo Intercollegiate hosted by Marshall University in Citrus Springs, Florida.

U of L head coach Mark Crabtree was looking for more consistency out of a lineup featuring four freshman and a senior and that's exactly what he got today as his young squad shaved nine strokes off its opening-round 299 to jump from 12th to sixth-place in the 20-team field.

For the first time in four spring events Crabtree's squad was able to assemble a solid effort from his entire lineup. Leading the Cards, as he has done for much of the spring season, was Anderson who improved on his opening-round 73 with a blistering second-round 69 to move into a tie with Brian Perry of Marshall for fourth-place on the individual board.

Fellow freshman Brett Jones followed his opening-round 73 with a 76 and sits tied for 28th, while senior Grant Sturgeon appears to be rounding back into the record-setting form he displayed during the fall season as he carded rounds of 78 and 72 to move into a tie for 39th.

Freshman Charlie Woo, who returned to the lineup after struggling through the first three events of the spring season, carded an opening-round 79 and followed with a second-round 73. Tied with Woo for 55th is fellow freshman Nick Ferrara who showed improvement and consistency with rounds of 75 and 77.

As a team, the Cards' second-round 290 was tied for the second-best team round of the day and pulled U of L into sixth-place, 13 shots off the pace set by Marshall and West Florida.

The events concludes with a third and final round on Sunday.
