Despite posting its two highest-scoring rounds of the 2001-02 season, the University of Louisville's men's golf team sits within striking distance in the middle of the 18-team field after the first two rounds of play at the Beau Chene Collegiate Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University in Mandeville, Louisiana.
Shooting an opening-round 318, their worst round of golf this season by 11 strokes, the Cards' circled the wagons and knocked seven strokes off the team score in the second round to pull within striking distance of the leaders heading into the final round of action on Tuesday. While the second-round 311 is still six shots higher than the Cards' previous high round of the season heading into the tournament, it was the seventh-best team score of the round and good enough to pull the young Cards from an 11th-place tie to ninth, 19 shots off the pace set by tournament-leader Virginia Commonwealth.
Much like the first event of the spring season, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic, U of L was led by freshmen Mark Anderson and Brett Jones. With consecutive rounds of 77, Anderson is tied for 17th, six shots off the pace set by Ryan Zylstra (71-77) of Virginia Commonwealth. Jones fired an opening-round 77, followed by a second-round 79 and is tied for 18th.
Senior Grant Sturgeon, whose 72.64 career stroke average is a U of L record, continued to struggle during the spring season after a stellar fall campaign. The all-conference performer notched just the fifth round in the 80s of his collegiate career and the first since his freshman campaign with an opening-round 82. He followed with a second-round 79 and sits in 52nd.
Freshman Charlie Woo (82-79) matched Sturgeon stroke for stroke in both rounds while senior Dean Halterman followed an opening-round 88 with a 76, the best round by any Cardinal on the day.
Play on Tuesday begins with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start.
