Senior Grant Sturgeon returned to form after struggling in the first two rounds of the spring season, but it was not enough to keep the University of Louisville's men's golf team from slipping into sixth-place on the final day of competition at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic hosted by Southern Miss.
The Cards, who sat five shots off the lead and in third place after two rounds, carded a 303, their third-highest round of the season, to finish in sixth-place, 12 shots behind host school Southern Miss which won the event with a score of 889.
Sturgeon, U of L's career stroke average leader, rebounded from a 76 and 77 in the first two rounds of competition with a promising 74 to finish tied for 23rd. However, freshmen Brett Jones and Mark Anderson were unable to find the form that put them both in the top 10 heading into the final round of competition.
Jones, who fired a 75 and 69 in the opening rounds, closed out the competition with a 76 to finish tied for seventh, while Anderson followed consecutive rounds of 74 on Monday with a 77 to finish 21st.
Senior Dean Halterman, who did not see action during the fall season, followed Monday's rounds of 80 and 75 with a final-round 76 to finish tied for 38th. Freshman Charlie Woo, who struggled with an 84 and 75 in the opening rounds, closed out the event with a 77 to finish tied for 58th.
The Cardinals return to action February 18-19 at the Beau Chene Collegiate Classic in Hammond, La.
